Feeling safe is not proof of safety

Why visitors' sense of safety is not a reliable proof of an event's actual safety – and how the quality of a security organisation should be judged.

Updated: · MOVETOS

No. Visitors’ sense of safety is an important part of the event experience, but it is not a reliable proof of an event’s actual safety.

What visitors can judge – and what they cannot

Visitors judge safety mostly by what they perceive: visible security staff, barriers, orderly processes and a relaxed atmosphere.

As a rule, they cannot judge whether escape routes are adequately sized, communication systems work or security measures are effective in an incident.

Conversely, conspicuous security measures can create unease even though they improve the actual level of protection.

Two yardsticks

This gives rise to two different yardsticks:

  • Perceived safety: How safe do visitors feel in their surroundings?
  • Actual safety: How effectively are relevant hazards limited by planned and implemented measures?

Both matter, but they must not be confused.

How quality is measured

The quality of a security organisation must therefore be assessed by traceable requirements, suitable measures and their verifiable effectiveness – not by visitor perception alone or by the absence of incidents.

Conclusion

A good security organisation makes for as carefree an event experience as possible. Whether it is actually effective is decided not by how safe visitors feel, but by its demonstrable performance.
